Style Spotting + Shopping: Preppy Prints Galore! Colonial Designs Apparel & Accessories Grand Opening

It’s been a little while since I’ve shared some local love and with Derby season (and hopefully warmer temperatures) about to kick into high gear, I was excited to get out of the house to check out the new offerings at Colonial Designs. Last week, the local shop known for its amazingly curated collection of home goods and fabulous floral arrangements began carrying clothing and accessories. To celebrate the addition of apparel, the shop had a little grand opening party and gave me a sneak peek at the clothes before the shopping got underway.

If you’ve shied away from Colonial Designs home wares in the past because of the prices, throw those fears aside. The clothes, accessories and jewelry are all incredibly reasonably priced – think $20-$30 for a statement necklace, $40-$60 for a printed tunic and $80-$120 for a great summer party dress – and are perfectly in line with the stores aesthetic. You’ll find lots of bright prints, preppy summer sundresses and classics with a twist (I was OBSESSED with a simple pair of lace shorts that would be perfect for summer). There’s just the right amount of stuff too – not too much to get overwhelmed but plenty of options. You also don’t have to worry about being seen at the pool or a wedding in the same top or dress – they are only carrying a limited quantity in each item to make sure you don’t have twins running around all over town.

The gals at Colonial did a really great job with their first round of merchandise and I’m looking forward to seeing what comes in as Derby and summer edge closer. Mostly I just snapped pictures and ogled the clothes but I did end up snagging a comfy stripe, super long racer-back tank that I’ll be able to wear as I edge closer to the end of this 10-month journey and wear long afterwards over bathing suits or paired with white jeans.

Definitely stop by if you’re in the St. Matthews area and tell ‘em Lou What Wear sent you!

The lovely team of Colonial Designs

Julie Dayton and Katie Gandolfo
Julie’s adorable ruffled black dress is available at Colonial; loved Katie’s layers and that awesome necklace. Megan Kute and Caitlin Brey bundled up in leather; Courtney Nassau looking simple, comfy and chic (my favorite combo) in a silk baseball team and flares (!!!)

Style Spotting: 2014 Academy Awards Superlatives * One of a Kind Style

This year I wasn’t as excited about the Academy Awards as I have been the last couple of years. I attribute this mostly to the fact that I haven’t seen as many of the nominated movies as I have in the past. So while I wasn’t cheering on any clear favorites, I definitely tuned in to watch the parade of beautiful coiffed, amazingly dressed celebrities stroll across the red carpet.

I will admit to taking a quick DVR break in the middle of the show but came back in time to catch the ‘Wizard of Oz’ tribute (loved Whoopi’s stockings and ruby slippers) and the final few awards. And while our hometown gal, Jennifer Lawrence, didn’t take home back-to-back Oscars, I loved her return to red (just this time with WAY less hair to do).

Since the Academy Awards are like the Prom on steroids (and with well-deserved awards), I decided to craft my final Diet Dr Pepper ‘One of a Kind’ Style (here’s the Golden Globes and Grammy versions) post around faux-superlatives. There were way too many memorable looks (and not so many misses) to narrow down to just one trend I loved so this way I can show off all my favorite with a bit of trademark ridiculousness.

I present to you, my 2014 Academy Awards Superlatives. I’m guessing you all will have a few disagreements, so let’s get some dialogue going in the comments. Also, who did I miss? (I’m thinking Bill Murray – Class Clown)

Best Personality: Jennifer Lawrence | Prettiest: Lupita Nyong’o | Most Unique: Amy Adams
Biggest Flirt: Leonardo DiCaprio | Most Attractive: Brad Pitt & Angelina Jolie | Best Hair (as if there was any question): Jared Leto
Best Singer: Kristen Chenoweth | Cutest Couple: Olivia Wilde & Jason Sudekis
Sweetest: Kristen Bell | Most Changed: Matthew McConaughey; Sexiest: Camila Alves | Best Dressed: Kate Hudson (my personal favorite of the night)
Best Smile: Julia Roberts | Most Popular: Sandra Bullock

I was hoping to accompany this post with a little Oscar inspired look of my own but the 4 inches of snow and the ensuing chaos it throws this city into (seriously – we shut down like it’s our job these days), kept me from getting an outfit post together.

So I’m using the red (Jennifer Lawrence), white/silver (Kate Hudson) and navy blue (Sandra Bullock, Amy Adams) as a little inspiration to create an Academy Awards inspired look that would work in everyday life. Since a wedding is the most common ‘get all dolled up’ event that most gals I know go to, I threw together a spring wedding look. I even let yesterday’s rainy weather inspire adding a little color in case an April-shower presents itself on the way to a wedding.

Style Spotting: NYFW Fall 2014

If you follow just about anyone fashion related on instagram or twitter, you’re probably on NYFW overload. I love {virtually} tagging along with some of my favorite bloggers and magazine editors as they tackle the stylish madness. And yes, I can’t help but feel a pang of jealousy at their adventures but life calls so I’m happy to watch from the sidelines.

Once I’ve had my fill of beautifully filtered, little square images, I head over to The Cut and scope out my favorite street style snaps. Yes, the shows are full of amazing pieces but it’s the way the gals rock it in real life that has me inspired for weeks, if not months, to come.

There’s still a few days left but here’s a few of my favorites so far.
