Style Spotting: Kentucky Derby 142

We made it to the finish line of another Kentucky Derby season. I am definitely not one to wish Derby away but putting it in the rear view means I’m one day closer to not being pregnant anymore (May 17 can’t come soon enough). Derby + Mother’s Day were the last milestones on the calendar before this due date so now I’m officially in waiting mode.

It wasn’t quite the same as last year’s Derby madness – both here on the blog (sorry for not getting a style series together, promise to get it together next year) and at work (ducked out of party/gala duties) so I’m already looking forward to Kentucky Derby 143. But enough of all that nonsense, let’s talk Derby one more time before next spring.

Want to know what locals and real girls and guys ACTUALLY wear to Derby, this post is for you. I get a little annoyed when the national media think throwing on a straw beach hat means you’re Derby-ready. It doesn’t. We all know that your hat has to be more than just something you can wear on a beach vacation. And I love that Churchill Downs and Derby sponsors bring in national bloggers and stars to shine a little light on Louisville and Derby but sometimes the looks don’t line-up with what Derby is really all about.

So here’s a look at what locals (including yours truly at 39 weeks) wore to Kentucky Derby 142 as well as some snaps from Kentucky Oaks 142. This is always one of my favorite posts of the year with a big thank you going out to all the gals that send in/tag me in pictures. I’ll update this a few times throughout the next couple days so if you want to get your picture added to the round-up, email it to me (danielle@louwhatwear.com) or tag me (@louwhatwear).

Style Spotting: Kentucky Derby 141

Kentucky Derby 141 has come and gone. Now I am in that post-Derby fog that’s a mix of pure exhaustion and a little bit of sadness that it’s all over. This year was one of my most memorable Derby seasons for a lot of reasons. If you’d asked me a year ago (when I was a giant pregnant swamp monster) if I thought I’d be able to run 13.1 miles, I would have laughed and said it wasn’t even a possibility. Somehow, with the help of my always supportive pal Caitlin, I made it across the finish line. Not only that but we ran for almost the entire race (save bathroom break and a couple of stretch breaks). Who knows if I’ll ever be able to do it again but I can cross that one off my bucket list.

On the more fun side, working on a Derby kick-off party with Moet & Chandon was the perfect way to kick-off Derby week and being part of the team working on the Hermitage Grand Gala was an epic end. It was all capped off with a seriously fun day at the track surrounded by a bunch of my favorite people.

I feel like the BIGGEST dummy for not taking a picture of my outfit from head to toe but honestly there was just no time for that. There was time for lots of snapchatting, betting on all the horses, wandering around and of course, drinking lilies and my Derby drink of choice, Budweisers. It was a good day, so good that it might be hard to top next year but I’m sure I’ll give it my best effort.

A bunch of gals out there gave Derby their best efforts too and the pictures of outfits was enough to have any style savvy girl swooning. I’ve rounded up a bunch but would love to add more. Every year I see a bunch of people finding their way to the blog on the hunt for the answer to the question, “what to wear to the Kentucky Derby?” so the more options there are here to share, the better. Want to add your ‘fit? Send it to danielle@louwhatwear.com or just tag me on Instagram (@louwhatwear).

Thanks for sticking with me through all the Derby posts. It’s back to the regular routine starting tomorrow!

Favorite Things: Vanity Fair Oscar Party Instagram Portraits

Being a big pop culture junkie, I am pretty bummed that I missed the Oscars last night on account of a LONG day of traveling. But being the junkie I am, I’ve already gone through picture after picture of the red carpet. My favorites: Reese Witherspoon, Rosamund Pike, Jennifer Anniston and Jennifer Lopez.

I’m guessing you’ve already seen all the red carpet favorites too so I’m rounding up my favorite post-Academy Award Show looks from, what I assume is, the classiest party on the earth – the Vanity Fair party.

Forget the award show, hitting up this party is on a DREAM list. Can you imagine how fun, fabulous and full of great gossip it must be? So yeah, if anyone ever even hinted that I could sneak in to it, I’d be there in a heart beat.

These Instagram portraits from inside the party by Mark Seliger only further confirmed how incredible I imagine the whole thing is. They also confirm that my Instagram game is piss-poor at best in comparison to these snaps.

The Mindy Kaling one may be my favorite – she looked so gorgeous and ever since I read her book, I’ve become a total fan girl. I’m only hoping there are more to come that haven’t yet been posted. Maybe a Reese Witherspoon or Lupita N’yongo portrait where they are pretending to laugh/smile because they are best friends?

Events + Style Spotting: Gumer & Co. ‘Diamonds, Drinks & Discounts’

Last week, Gumer & Co. Jewelry hosted a shopping event that was a combination of things I can definitely get behind. Diamonds, Drinks & Discounts. Yes please.

Nothing like getting together over the holidays and picking out some new sparkly jewelry over a cocktail. I couldn’t make it to the party but some pals snapped some pictures of the set-up that included drinks from Copper & Kings and apps from Brownies The Shed. How pretty are those cocktail rings Emilee is sporting below?

In between the wining and dining, there was lots of trying on pieces from their gorgeous selection of jewelry.  How pretty are those cocktail rings Emilee is sporting below?

But it wasn’t all break the bank jewels. Gumer & Co. (225 S. Hurstbourne Parkway | 502.327.3330) has a ton of great gift options – like these Alex and Ani bracelets – that will put a smile on any gals face. You can even go in and pick out some favorites and then send your guy in to pick from the options. And if you know a guy looking to pop the question and make it a December to remember,  Gumer & Co. has a special right now where they will buy the groom’s wedding band when he seals the deal on an engagement ring for the bride-to-be. If you stop in, be sure to tell ’em you saw it here!

Ann Speltz – I’ll take that blazer, mmkay?
Cocktails from Copper & Kings
Martha Stephens, Meghan Hagedorn and Ian Crawford
I’ll take one of each please.
