Derby Dress of the Day: For the Grandstands

Apr 19, 2016

I know, I know, you’re probably getting worn out with all the Derby posts and so if it isn’t your bag, you’re in luck. I’ll be rolling out some new stuff on the site in the next few days so you can avoid all the Derby talk if you’re not into that kind of thing.

Today’s look was inspired by the Saks Fifth Avenue Friends & Family Sale which is too good not to tap into, especially when it comes to dresses. No code needed, just 30% off your entire purchase and some items are marked WAY down. Considering the brands they carry and the time of year, it’s a good time to pick out a few options to wear this summer.

Lilly Pullitzer Bristol Dress

While the shape on this shift is simple, the print and embellishment is far from it. I’m not usually a big Lilly Pulitzer enthusiast but this one is right up my alley. Don’t get me wrong, I love the brand – I just don’t find myself wearing it often. I blame that on a lack of beach parties to attend.

I picked out this out for gals who have grandstand tickets for the fastest two minutes in sports. The Grandstands is like a fancier version of the paddock. You don’t have access to a ton of amenities but you can see the track and that makes all the difference in the world. That being said, you’ll be sitting (or standing when it comes to the big race) on bleacher seats and as such, there’s still a lot of bumping into people and randomness that isn’t quite as genteel as the clubhouse areas. Basically, think spilled beers, random food containers on the floor and people bumping into you as they pass you to get to their seats.

I love this dress for the grandstands for a couple reasons. 1. The dark background color and bold print are sure to hide any accidental spills. 2. It’s got a simple shape that makes for easy walking around, sitting and standing on the seats (aka it’s not too short). 3. It’s no super tight which will keep you from getting super hot and sticky if it’s a crazy hot day. 4. It’s really cute (obviously the most important reason).

If you’re going to the grandstand, pair it with wedges since you’ll be on your feet a bunch and you don’t want to fall when you, inevitably, stand up on those bleachers. I think a pink and yellow fascinator would look amazing paired with this dress but you could also go the pink and green or navy and green route.

More from the Saks Sale…
