Derby Style: Florals & Feathers – What I Wore to KY Derby 143

May 8, 2017

After six weeks of Kentucky Derby looks, I figured I probably needed to share what I actually wore to the races, so here you have it!

I didn’t end up settling on this dress until about a week or so before (although I did wear this combo to Thurby). I wanted to do something floral and bright but with a twist. Every time I tried describing this one to friends, I got a very puzzled look (anytime you tell someone there is a toucan on your dress, be prepared to get a look) but once they saw the pic, they got it. Side note: I know it could use a little tailoring on the straps but after trying two tailors to no avail, I just let it ride.

Obviously, the hat was key and my girl Britni at Headcandi truly knocked it out of the park. I absolutely LOVE this piece and am a little bummed that I’ll probably only wear it this one time. Anyone want to borrow it next year?

When it came to the weather, I had faith that it would clear up in the afternoon so I stuck with my original plan. I knew we wouldn’t be wading in any water or mud, so I went with my original shoe choice. These wedges were super comfortable and I never once thought about swapping them out for flip-flops. Since it was a little chilly, I ended up throwing this jacket on and it was just warm enough without covering up any of the details.

As for the rest of the day – it was truly one of my favorite Derby’s ever. One of my closest friends from high school and his wife came in town, so we were focused on making sure they had a good time. They joined us and our friends Grant and Kelly in a box in 114 where we were safe under cover during those random pop up storms. It was all bets, bourbon, and Budweisers (it’s my redneck Derby drink of choice because if you’re gonna spend $10 on a beer, you might as well get your money’s worth). I also spent most of the day poking people with my fascinator – so apologies to anyone who’s eye I poked out while waiting in lines.

By far, the best part of the day was hitting the trifecta in the Derby race. I never win on bets. Or if I do, it’s usually something along the lines of winning $16 on a $12 bet, not much to write home about. But lady luck was looking in my direction and I ended up being a pretty big winner. Needless to say, I was beyond excited –  so if you saw me dancing around like a crazy person – that’s why.

I’m still recovering from this weekend (so.sleepy) but can’t wait for next year already. Until then, I’m packing up my hats and gearing up for summer. Unless anyone wants to go to the Preakness….

What a cool outfit! That hat really is crazy fabulous! It almost needs to be made into a decor piece to keep celebrating forever!
