Summer Mix Tape

Apr 23, 2014

Okay so I get that we’re not quite yet at summer yet – we’re barely getting used to all the loveliness of Spring but this time of year always reminds me of the end of the school year. Humor me with some old lady college reminiscing but one of the reasons I love Derby week so much is that the Saturday at Churchill Downs was always the icing on the cake after a long Spring semester.

We’d wrap up finals, pack up for the summer then head west down I-64 for a weekend in Louisville at the track. And like any big weekend, my friends and I would pick a theme song for the weekend (no laughing please and yes, we still tend to do this when we get together) and then put together a little music mix. First it was on CD’s then it moved to our iPods but there was always a mix.

That ‘mix’ would inevitable be the soundtrack to the summer – getting played on repeat through Memorial Day and long days at the pool. They also were pretty clutch when I’d hit the road for the crazy long drive home from Lexington to Miami.

The other day while doing some crazy closet cleaning, I stumbled upon a giant stack of old CD’s that included a bunch of those old mixes. Although seriously scratched, I combed through them to put together a new/old mix. It’s a little schizophrenic and all over the place (yes, it includes both Hall & Oates and Goodie Mob) when it comes to genres/time periods but that’s what makes it fun (to me). I’m considering sending this all old hits are new again mix to all my college roomies to get their summer started right (even if it is from an office rather than poolside).

Now when it comes to making a mix, I do a little digging on Spotify and then send it over (did this a couple weeks ago with a friend).

Also, I love a good mix – so if you want to put together some summer fun music and send it over to me, I wouldn’t be mad.
