Sharing the Lou: “THIS… Is Louisville” A Periodical Project

Nov 2, 2011

On this beautiful fall day, I’m taking a momentary break from fashion to share a really cool project with you all (and to showcase the awesomeness that is Twitter). A couple weeks ago, I got an email on my personal twitter that @THISisLouisville began following me. Since these types of accounts usually get my attention (as opposed to the ones that as obviously porn, spam or weirdos), I checked them out.

Turns out “This… is Louisville” is the brainchild of Maggie Huber and has all the potential to be a REALLY cool fixture in Louisville. So I gave her a shout and after a couple emails, I knew I had to write a post and support her new project.

A little background on Maggie….

Maggie is a Louisville native (she went to Presentation, in case you all needed to know – I know how important that is to natives) and graduated from Western Kentucky University’s famed photojournalism program. Since graduation she’s interned with John Nation at Louisville magazine, shot for Underwired magazine and has freelanced with the Lexington Herald-Leader and the Courier-Journal.

How “THIS… Is Louisville” came about…

As a freelancer in today’s economy, there is no guarantee on the next assignment so like any great entrepreneur, Maggie decided to make her own opportunity.

“I started thinking about what was missing from our local media outlets and combined with my love for visual storytelling decided it was the ‘face’ of the story.  We can talk all day about Louisville’s refugee community or joblessness or what have you, but if I put a name and a face on it and show you what their day to day life is it makes things totally different.”

Maggie emailed some of her buddies from WKU and shared her idea about starting a publication that focused on the faces in the news. It didn’t take much to get the group excited about sharing images and stories that are close to their hearts that could make a difference and would have gone untold otherwise.

“THIS … is Louisville”
Maggie’s idea has turned into a photojournalism based magazine that she is looking to launch this winter. The mantra is,  “We believe everyone has a story to tell. THIS…is Louisville is a photo documentary based magazine telling the stories of real people in Louisville.”

The publication will be entirely photo-driven; text will be limited to an intro or short essay with detailed captions. Their goal is to let the images tell the story. All the images will be in black and white which Maggie believes will “take the viewer straight to the emotion of the images.” She is hoping to share news and stories that either the main stream media is not covering in depth or at all. Each story will also include information on how readers can get involved, donate or learn more.

Maggie’s goal is to be inclusive as well by covering all areas and walks of life in Louisville. “Diversity if key for us, we want to relate to as many people as possible with the magazine.”

How you can help kick start “THIS… is Louisville”

Maggie needs our help to get her project off the ground. She has a Kickstarter page where she is asking people to help back her project. In order to get the first issue printed, she’ll need to raise $3,500 which covers printing 3,000 copies and extra business upstart costs. The Kickstarter funds won’t cover everything but will allow She’s already raised $1,586, so a little over half. Help a Louisville gal out and donate a couple bucks to a really cool cause by visiting her page here.
She’s hoping to start a regular monthly publication, so if you’re interested in advertising, give her a shout at thisislouisville @ gmail.com (sorry for the spaces, it’s so she doesn’t get spammed!)

I’ll be back with more style spotting tomorrow until then get outside and enjoy the amazing weather.
