Waterfront Fashion Week: Designer Spotlight – Sara Simpson

Oct 15, 2012

Just to add a little sparkle to your Monday AND to get locals excited for Waterfront Fashion Week, I’m sharing a profile on a local jewelry designer who will be participating in the big event (get your tickets here).

Sara Simpson’s pieces appeal to ladies of all ages. I could see layering her necklaces together and I love all her earring options. Everything is handmade too so you know you’ll have a unique, special piece that stands out from the rest.

Oh and I’ve had a few questions about the line-up for WFW. Things get started on Wednesday October 17th and go through Saturday October 20th.

Meet Sara Simpson

In a couple sentences, give us a little recap of your background?

I grew up on a farm in Virginia and studied Psychology at Hollins University.  Most of my career background has been in retail, marketing and design.  Prior to my present company I was the Vice-President of sales and marketing for This End Up Furniture Company for many years.

How did you get started in fashion?

My love of fashion began at age two when I received my first pair of cowboy boots and animal print purse for Christmas.  I’ve always had a passion for vintage and eclectic jewelry.  It’s definitely a creative process to incorporate these unique pieces into spectacular new jewelry.

How did you get involved in Waterfront Fashion Week? What is your vision for your show?

Friends asked if I was interested.  I immediately thought about how much I love Charleston Fashion Week and what a fabulous idea this would be to bring to Louisville.  My vision is to introduce my unique, custom jewelry to a wider audience.

What are you looking forward to most at WFW?

I’m looking forward to seeing the emerging and featured designers such as Jules Reid.  Revealing some of the new signature pieces from Sara Simpson Design will also be exciting.

What do you think is unique about Louisville fashion?

Louisville fashion is very eclectic.  We have a wide variety of department stores, locally owned boutiques, and consignment shops.  We have the best selection and prices for vintage clothing and jewelry compared to any city on the east coast.

What goes into creating one of your pieces?

Inspiration comes in many forms and from many sources.  Sometimes it begins with the materials at hand – the beads and the vintage pieces and I have.  Other times I may interpret my surroundings into a beautiful piece of jewelry.  I am constantly looking for inspiration in everything I see and do.

Who are some of your fashion icons?

Iris Apfel, of course!!  I truly admire anyone who expresses his or her own unique style, despite what everyone else is wearing.

What do you think WFW will do for the Louisville fashion scene?

Hopefully, more and more Louisvillians will be inspired to show their unique styles.  The possibilities are endless.
