While the Derby is the main event, the Kentucky Oaks is no shrinking violet. These days, Oaks – which takes place on Friday – is almost as big as Derby, especially when it comes to getting dressed.
The big difference between the Oaks and Derby when it comes to getting ready, is the addition of a pop of pink. It’s become almost a requirement – even for the guys. Since the Oaks is a race for the fillies, Churchill Downs made the move a few years back to partner with Susan G. Komen for breast cancer awareness. The day includes a variety of events that honor survivors, including a parade to honor them before the big race. To show support, all attendees are encouraged to wear a little (or a lot) of pink.
I had two Kristen’s help me out for this shoot and both gravitated to this pink number. You saw it first on Kristen Cripe here for a night out and now Kirstin Esham is sporting it topped off with a hat, ready for a day at the track. Rather than gold accents, for this day look we went with pops of turquoise which I think make this especially spring-y. And rather than go head-to-toe colorful, we topped it off with as simple, chic white Headcandi piece.
If you’re going to the Oaks, even if you’ve already picked out your look, make sure you add a tiny touch of pink. For guys it can be as simple as your socks or a bow tie. For the ladies, consider adding a pink flower or feather to your headpiece. Oh and while you’re there – make sure to try a Lily- it’s by far my favorite drink for a day at Churchill Downs.
