When people say time flies, it is no joke. Blake is 10 weeks old, we’re in week two of day care and we’re slowly but surely getting the hang of this whole three kids thing. I’m pretty sure it all boils down to: more laundry, more random crap, less time for Netflix and a lot less sleep.
I can deal with almost of all of it except the last one. Can a girl get some more sleep? I can’t complain too much because, all things considered, she’s a pretty good sleeper but I’m used to a solid night’s sleep and that’s not in the cards right now. A few weeks ago we got thrown a lifeline with this Owlet Baby Monitor. I don’t write a ton about baby stuff over here (although it’s happening much more often these days – can’t help it with all these kiddos) but every once in a while you find something you just have to share. That’s what’s happening with this little magic sock.
So most everyone registers for a baby monitor and while we have a great one, Blake is kind of a noisy sleeper. She sounds like a mix between a pug and a piglet, basically a lot of grunting. Even if the volume is at the lowest setting, it will keep me up. Our rooms are close enough that if she starts crying, I can hear it right away. So on the hungry cry front, we’re covered. But there’s always a chance something else could happen.
I’m not one to be a worrier but I’d also rather be safe than sorry. Enter Owlet. This monitor uses a Smart Sock to monitor your baby’s heart rate and oxygen level while they sleep. It’s the same pulse oximetry that hospitals use to monitor babies. The sock (through an independent base station) sends baby’s heart rate and oxygen levels to a base station and to your phone which will send an alert if they fall outside of range. That way you can sleep easily, without worry or anxiety, knowing it’s designed to alert.

The sock comes in three sizes so it grows with your baby and the app is available for both iPhones and Android phones (you know I’m living that ‘droid life). We’ve been using it on Blake for the last three or four weeks and have loved it. With my other kids, the first couple times they slept through the night I’d wake up with a mild panic thinking I may have slept through something. So now the few times (seriously, just a few and by a few, I mean exactly three) Blake has made it all the way to 7 or 8 am, I’ve woken up without that quick rush of anxiety.
In case you’re wondering, I’ve only had it come off her foot once in the middle of the night and I’m 99% sure that was user error on my part – not her wiggling out of it. And the app is really user-friendly. Easy to set up and get running (nothing like the baby monitors that have to hook up to your wi-fi to work – I’ve heard horror stories about those).
Last but not least – I love the color. Clearly the mint green speaks to me.
Again, I promise to not fill up the site with a hundred and one baby posts but with so many of my friends and friends of friends having babies – I feel like I have to share the good stuff. You know, those worth-the-splurge items. Plus, if you are going the BabyList route (which I would totally do if I was about to have my first kid although thank god that is behind me), you can add the Owlet and have your generous {aunt, cousin, bestie, boss} order it for you.
