Inspiration: Cheers to the New!

Dec 31, 2013

We did it. Another year in the books (well, almost).

The last day of the year always brings with it a little bit of reflection and I thought I’d share some of my resolutions for the new year. Rather than picking things that I certainly won’t stick to, I’m going to try and stick with focusing on the following in hopes of living a simpler, less stressed life this year.

Enjoy the day. I can be a bit of a planner. So much so that I tend to over plan my day leaving me stressed with a list of things I “must do.” Moving into this year, I’m going to try and set the goal of accomplishing one task a day and then just striving to make the most of the time I have. Lord knows the list of to do’s at work isn’t getting any smaller and home is a revolving door of chores. So instead of focusing on what I have to do, I’m going to try and enjoy the little moments and make the most of every day.

Wish me luck.

It’s going to be all good. Whenever something bad happens or I get negative feedback (at work, on the blog, from friends/family), I get crazy defensive and take it really hard to heart. Getting defensive is my number one issue in all kinds of issues so rather than get instantly defensive and combative, my goal for 2014 is to not let the negative put such a stranglehold on my thoughts and instead focus on the good that’s lurking around the corner. It may take a little while to show itself but it’s definitely there.

Rise above. Here’s one where I have a definite need for improvement. I’m sure a lot of us can get caught up in the drama – at work, with friends, with family (especially around the hectic holidays) – sometimes it just gets the best of us. This year I’m going to try and save the drama for my momma (okay not really). This one goes hand-in-hand with #2 on the list  – i’m going to try not to get all caught up in the he said, she said and instead just let things go and take the higher road. Here’s what someone once told me that I try to remember, “if you’re not going to remember it or be affected by it in 5 years, why bother?”

Go! Now the image may suggest this is a goal to travel more and that’s definitely on the list but for me, it’s more of a push to just go. Go to dinner with friends, go on a random weekend trip, go to the movies with my little man, go on that new business meeting, go grab coffee with interesting folks. No more making excuses on reasons why I can’t do things.  I’m going to try and jump at the opportunities presented more often and enjoy them in the moment.

It’s also going to mean making sure to only take the opportunities that really interest me or fit in the parameters of my life. Saying no to things is just as important as saying yes sometimes.

You Got This. My major goal for 2014 is not to let comparison, doubt and pangs of jealousy get me down. I can be really hard on myself and it can be frustrating when you feel like you’re working hard on something and just not getting where you want to be. My goal is to put in that little extra effort each day to put my best foot forward and whenever that happens, good things will follow (see #3).

Sorry to bore you all with this self-help mantra today but I thought getting it down would help me make it happen. What are your goals for 2014?
