Real Life Gets in the Way

Oct 22, 2015

You’re about to stumble into a real life confession. If you’re looking for an outfit post, I’ll (hopefully) be back on track tomorrow. Until then, there’s this.

Earlier this year I made a goal to really focus on Lou What Wear, improve the content, go to more events, showcase more talented people, do more of what I originally set out to do on this site when I launched it over four years ago (can you believe it?). And then you know what? Life got in the way. Sometimes it was fun stuff, sometimes boring stuff and sometimes it’s crappy stuff. Just a big old mix of stuff.

I am so envious of the people out there that have it all together, hell I’m jealous of the people who are able to just make it look like they’ve got it all together. Me, I’m always just hanging by on a thread, simultaneously behind at a project at work, a growing stack of laundry, a handful of home projects I keep saying I’m going to get to and struggling to figure out dinner because going to the grocery store is my own personal hell.

I’m guilty of losing focus, being overextended and at times, crippled by anxiety. As the length of my to-do list grows so does my desire to crawl in to a ball and wish it would just go away. Since that’s clearly no way to deal with your problems, I just take them as they come my way. Never really catching up and doing just enough to get by. I sometimes turn around at the end of the day wondering what in the hell I was actually doing while also wondering how the day went by so fast. This post alone took me way longer than it should have and got interrupted at least six times while putting it together.

Right now, I’m in one of those peaks where everything is happening at once – work has been one big project or crisis after another, combined with wanting to get our house on the market again to sell; add in the regular routine of trying to keep two small children from destroying everything around them while also keeping them feed and watered. Plus sometimes I like to workout or sleep (what if you could work out when you were sleeping – can someone invent something to accomplish that?).

That’s not to say it’s not great too because things are, all in all, going really well. That and I hate being a big complainer because complainers are the worst. Being busy at work means business is good, the opportunity to move is amazing and my kids are always surprising me with how hilarious they can be. Basically what I’m saying is that while all of this has been going on, it’s been hard to clear time for posting pictures of myself in cute outfits. Half the time it’s because lately, the outfits aren’t cute and the rest of the time I’m dealing with all the crap above. Thankfully sometimes the outfits are still cute but then a day goes by where I realize I haven’t taken a picture of it, followed immediately by the next thought, “does anyone really care?” So that’s where I’m at.

Case in point – I was going to throw together an outfit post today and then … just like that real life got in the way. Well that and the fact that Reese lost my old mouse which makes doing ANYTHING on my computer crazy annoying (I miss scrolling!). Finally got a new mouse today and realized I had to upgrade my operating system to make it work. Still got another 18 hours for that thing to download. FML. Not really, but you get the point.

So as much as I would like to present my life through a perfect Instagram filter, it’s not always all it’s cracked up to be. For me, it’s more like standing on a mess of cracker crumbs while trying to keep my phone from being dropped in the toilet. But, hey! these jeans do fit great. So there’s the bright side. Here’s to always looking for it.

  1. You can get an amen from this corner! I’m right there with you — commitments everywhere and never enough time. The problem is, I keep committing to things that I love: freelance work, which I love, my own business, which I love, charity work, etc., etc. My house came down with a wretched cold last week, and I was forced to acknowledge how very much it takes to keep all the balls in the air. Here’s to the juggling act life; I fear things would be quite boring any other way!

Thanks Heather! Yeah, I agree life would be pretty boring if it weren’t for all the craziness!
Cheers to having stuff you love to keep you busy.

I know I’ll still be here for the next post 🙂 Confessions like this one remind me why I follow in the first place. A real person. A real fashion inspiration. Not a life displayed with smoke and mirrors. … and of course, a fellow Louisvillian! Hang in there, girl.

  3. Lindsay says:

Amen to this! I’m glad I’m not alone. It’s refreshing to read this type of post because I constantly feel like I’m failing. You’re doing great!

    • Danielle says:

Definitely not alone! I think there’s a lot of us out there just trying to make it through the day without losing it. I appreciate your note and hang in there!

  4. Jaclyn says:

And this is exactly why we love you 🙂

  5. Erin says:

I think you’re fabulous! You’re a real person with life to tackle, and you pull it all off beautifully! I always love your posts, and I’m glad there’s more depth than just clothes and more clothes. That crap gets old! Love your ability to not take things too seriously and still look super cute in the process! 🙂

    • Danielle says:

You’re too kind Erin and I appreciate your note. And lord yes, I know there is more to life than just all the clothes. I mean, the clothes are good but everything else is better!

  6. Lauren says:

Keep your head up, I admire your style so much. And if it’s any consolation, I have all the same feelings, all the time…

  7. choma says:

You look so great every day, even if it’s not the most fashionable thing on earth you put things together in a way few people can…it’s why I imitate it the morning after! We are all a mess obv. but you are by far the most stylish person that I know, and even on the days that you don’t feel it, you have an inspiring look. Keep it up. Bren agrees.

  8. Abby says:

This is why I follow Lou What Wear. You keep it real! Girls run the world 🙂

  9. I’ll agree with the other commenters, it’s incredibly refreshing to see other people out there being their authentic selves and embracing those “oh shit” moments in life and/or admitting that we don’t live perfect lives. It’s a constant struggle for me, and I don’t balance half the plates that you do. So, as always: hats off to you!
