Secondary Embarrassment: How to Get Away With Murder

Nov 9, 2014

Have you guys been watching ‘How to Get Away with Murder?’ Just like half of all American women, I tuned in to that first episode and have been watching diligently since. I love love loved those first few episodes but the last few episodes have been more ‘meh’ for me and this week’s have me questioning whether to keep tuning in.

I can’t decide what it is about it that’s just not jiving with me  – the whole murder back-and-forth subplot or the fact that there isn’t a single likable character on the show (save that one hottie detective – Nate). Not a one.  I feel mildly sympathetic towards Annalise and I appreciate her attempting to wipe that smug look off that Rebecca character’s face (the “townie girl accused of murder”) but she’s still not enough for me to really love the show… yet. One friend suggested that Viola Davis is just too good of an actress for TV. Maybe she’s realized that as well and that’s why she looks so annoyed/frustrated/exasperated.

The students (who look straight out of a J.Crew catalog – save the dude from Orange is the New Black) aren’t any better. They are all unique in their ability to be entirely unlike bale. Bratty, obnoxious, annoying, pathetic,  bratty or just plain lame. You don’t get to know any of them beyond their one-sided personalities since they each barely get any individual screen time other than to reaffirm their caricature. I used to like that little Teddy Bear Wes but that whole relationship with the murder girl makes me want to shake him. I mean all of the characters look like they just ate something disgusting for dinner while sitting across from their most hated enemy.

Enough random ranting, my main beef with this show is the move from the serial format with a little continuation on the side to the full blown Lana Starsgard murder storyline. Frankly it’s kind of boring and I feel like they are dragging it out WAY too long. Like last week there was the whole “Why is your d*** on a dead girl’s phone?” question but then almost nothing about that this week. And if I have to watch Rebecca axt sad and sulky anymore I may just break my TV.

Last but not least, did anyone else get the heebie jeebies when they did that sex/autopsy scene? I get it. It’s supposed to push the envelope and be cutting-edge but really all it did was gross me out.

At this point I’m not giving up but I’m close to deleting it from my DVR. I want to love it. I really really want to love it so I’m going to stick with it for a couple more weeks. We’ll see where this whole thing goes.

Are you watching How to Get Away with Murder? I am out on a limb on this one or are you picking up what I’m putting down?

  1. It’s became one of my favorite shows on air currently. Mostly due to the pushing of the envelope with the gay character and story plot. The writer is a gay man, and he, like I, grew up gay in a society where there were no gay characters on TV, definitely not a main character on a prime time TV show. He, along with Shonda, wanted to give their gay character his own story, his own voice, his own sex scenes, and personally it’s a winner in my book for that reason. This may not make a lot of sense, but while I was growing up I couldn’t watch a tv show and see a cute couple like you could, and it made me feel like I was the only one who felt the way I did. I’m so excited for this generation of young people to see that love is love, no matter who it involves.

I agree that it’s great that they are showing gay relationships but the reason I’m not loving the show right now has nothing to do with that. I think the characters are one-sided and frankly, smug.
I hope the show turns back around because I loved it those first few weeks but lately it’s gotten boring and predictable.

I have been trying to figure out why I really don’t like this show that much and I think you really got it when you said that you don’t particularly like any character. Thinking on it, there’s no character that I truly enjoy watching. The flash forwards are confusing. I think I’m taking it off my DVR and filling its slot with Masters of Sex.

THANK YOU for the comment on the sex/autopsy scene! I couldn’t watch it, it totally freaked me out. But I am still watching the show….I guess I want to see the end.

  4. I’m pretty sure the only reason why I still watch this show, and watched it from the beginning, is because it’s right after Scandal. I LOVE Viola Davis but the show is losing my interest too. I’m ready to know more about the murder trial and less about other clients they pick up. I’m going to try and finish the first season, hopefully it gets better!!

    PS LOVE this series! 😉
