Kentucky Derby Style: Jumping into Thurby!

Apr 4, 2019

How do you feel about Thurby?

I hate the name but have become a big fan of the day. Since Oaks has become almost as big as Derby, Thurby has taken on Oaks’ local flair. If you’ve never been Thurby, or the Thursday of Derby Week, is slightly more laid back but still gives you the chance to dress up and have a little fun with your outfit. While Oaks and Derby you’re guaranteed to see hats and fascinators galore, Thurby is more of a mixed bag. Some people wear headpieces or hats while others go without. You’ll also see more petite fascinators – simple headbands with pops of feathers or flowers.

Because I am extra, I think you can go for a bold headpiece, like this one from Fascinate Designs, and just pair down your outfit a little. Rather than go for a full, over the top look, you can go for a plain dress or something simple like this jumpsuit.

In the past, I’ve been firmly against the jumpsuit for a day at the track… mostly because it makes bathroom breaks a little more harrowing. But this one was too comfy to pass up. I still think they are only an option if you have tickets inside. The outdoor and paddock bathrooms can get into Lord of the Flies territory so you may want to avoid it if you’re going to be hanging down there.

Either way, I advocate for a fun hat if you’re heading to the track Thurby. There are so few opportunities to wear outfits like this so you’ve got to take them while you have the chance!

Oh and this jumpsuit is from last year’s Tory Burch collection but you can grab it at their store in the Outlet Shoppes of the Bluegrass. If you don’t want to go out there, you can always call and they’ll ship it to you.  Or if you want to rent it for the races, you can at Rent the Runway!

Don’t forget that if you love any of these fascinators, the girls at Fascinate Designs will customize them for you. So if you like this style but want it in white and pink, you can. You can also have them make something specifically to match your dress.
