Shopping: Trend Spotting at Apricot Lane

Nov 21, 2011

Last week, I was invited to check out Apricot Lane in Westport Village. All truth be told, this wasn’t my first trip to the store, I’ve walked in there before just to be a little overwhelmed by their massive amounts of inventory. This time, I learned my lesson. Unlike other stores with tons of items that you have to hunt for, Apricot Lane will help you do the hunting.

The store is owned by the fun & so friendly Wendy & Kimberly. After literally a minute, I felt like I’d known them for ages. Between the two of them they have SIX daughters (yes, you read that right). They decided that they wanted to open up a boutique that catered to moms and daughters while also catering to their budgets. The majority of the items are under $100 and it’s not hard to find a handful of things you’ll want to walk out with.

I wasn’t sure I’d find anything I had to have at first but I walked out with a cozy fair isle sweater and pair of boots. I was also OBSESSED with a fur vest they had that would go perfectly with brown or black without being bulky for $89. I didn’t snag it but have compared it to every fur vest I’ve seen since and none of the others have compared.

Since the store is all about girls of every age being able to find a great look, we decided to create some looks that play off current trends styled for moms & their daughters. Hope you enjoy!

p.s. – Make sure to check back tomorrow cause I’ll be posting a giveaway for Lou What Wear readers (hint: it’s perfect for Cards & Cats fans!).

This was actually the last look we pulled but it is definitely my favorite. I am a sucker for sequins and I love the gold & black here. The lace detail on the dress is a little unexpected too and while some may think it’s a little too much, I think it’s just right.

I love both looks which is probably appropriate since I am a mom (barely – I have a one year old) but feel more like just a daughter. The mom look is on the left. The hem line is a little longer and the open sleeves give a little bit of coverage (with a touch of sexiness). The daughter look on the left has a higher hemline and we paired it with tall boots to toughen it up a little.

But let’s be real – these looks would look great on anyone. Mom, daughter or anywhere in between.

For the second look, we focused on leather (probably because I’d been focused on the leather dress on the right since I walked into the store). Once again, we styled it two ways. The mom look on the left has a little longer hemline (with a fun & tough black leather skirt) and a little more coverage on the arms. I spotted the detailed neckline top when browsing around and was happy we found a way to work it into the looks. The dress on the right could work for anyone but we styled it a little younger with strands of gold necklaces, a cross body bag and some fun shoes.

The leather dress had a jersey back which gives it a little more shape (saving you from looking too boxy). This is a great basic and would definitely work for a night out or a day at the office.

The bad news: We did another really fun faux fur look but the pictures didn’t turn out (still figuring out all the ins & outs of my fancy camera) which is a huge bummer.

The good news: I’ll be back tomorrow with a giveaway you’re going to love from the gals at Apricot Lane!

In the mean time, which look is your favorite? Will you be rocking leather or sequins (or both!) this holiday season?

p.s. – I was not paid for this post and all opinions are courtesy of yours truly. Just got invited to come in & check everything out. Also, I love giveaways and hope to be able to do them regularly for you, my faithful (and fab) readers.
