Kentucky Derby Style: Royally Inspired

Mar 29, 2019

Today is a good day. It’s Friday (automatic win), I’m writing this from the warm, sunshine of South Carolina (yay for spring break), the Cats play tonight (albeit way too late) AND this may be one of my favorite Derby posts ever.

Admittedly, I am one of those people that imagines that Derby will be a perfect sunny day every year. But let’s all be real. It’s not. The last few years have been a mixed bag with some sun but also lots of rain and its fair share of chilly temperatures. So this year, I wanted to make sure to share some looks that pair well with jackets and layers. Because as much as I love a fit and flare dress, it’s hard finding the right jacket to pair with them.

I’m partnering with Macy’s to share some looks and when I went shopping, I kept my goal in mind. I also wanted to make sure to find dresses that come in a wider variety of sizes and work for gals of all ages. I feel like this look fits the bill on all accounts. The style is simple but the graphic print give it a more youthful edge. The pictures online don’t do it justice – it’s much, much prettier in person.

I wanted to go for a more royal-inspired Derby look here too, so I paired it with a simple feathery black fascinator, these mules (that I LOOOOVE and are on big time sale right now – I think you can score them for $77 if you go quickly – plus they come in a few other colors including basic black), and a sleek duster jacket. I feel like it has the vibe – granted, at a much lower price point than the Royal Ascot set.

I’m going to be sharing a few other Derby looks from Macy’s but I couldn’t help but kick off with this one. I love it so much that I may end up breaking it out for a day at the track myself – Thurby perhaps? If you haven’t stopped back into Macy’s lately, you should swing in. They have the majority of the Derby dresses upstairs but they are scattered around the first floor too. Plus it’s a great place to grab a last minute hat or fascinator. Or if you’re ordering from out of town, you can buy a plain one and then doll it up yourself with extra feathers or flowers.
