Kentucky Derby Style: Fun and Feathered

Mar 25, 2019

Okay so last week, Derby felt like forever away and now it feels like it’s tomorrow. Well, except for the weather part. I’d love for that to start cooperating soon. Baby steps.

This week, I’m trying to get my life in order before we head out of town to Kiawah Island for Spring Break (have you been? send recs). I cannot wait but it’s one of those things I can’t think about because there’s so much to get done between now and Thursday. Of course, every year I stay in town for spring break, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING HAPPENS. It’s dead. Everyone is gone. Nothing is going on. It’s like you can hear the crickets everywhere you go.

Then, this year we decide to go on a big trip and of course, EVERYTHING IS HAPPENING. Work projects, fun invites for the blog, just all the things. I don’t get it.

That’s of course the way it goes though, right? I know when we get back it’s going to be all derby everything so I am trying to get as much stuff done in advance to prepare. Shooting a bunch of stuff today and I have a ton that I’ve already shot that I just need to get on here. Also, Derby Dress of the Day is coming back officially this week AND I will be unveiling the nominees of the Louisville Favorites. Can’t wait to narrow those down for the final vote.

But today, I’m excited to share these pics from my shoot last week with Dress & Dwell and Xtreme Transportation. They asked me to tag along for their Derby shoot and I happily obliged. Granted, it was about 40 degrees during this shoot but if you pretend it’s warm you start to forget that you can’t feel your toes… Sike, that’s a lie. It took me all day to warm back up. I’m thinking that since it’s staying cold so long, it just means that it will be super hot on Derby. Wishful thinking but I’m sticking with it.

Anyways, this blue and green combo is even prettier in person. The Headcandi fascinator (you all know I live for all of Britni’s pieces) pairs perfectly and I am obsessed with the big feather addition. I am all about a big, bold headpiece and this one is right up my alley. One year I had her make me one with a feather so absurdly large that I poked about 10,004 people’s eyes out at Churchill Downs.

The dress fits really well and runs true to size. I am loving all of Dress & Dwell’s latest Derby dresses. So many pretty pastels, per usual, but there are lots bold colors and fun patterns. They did give me a heads up that a lot of these styles run small (and as you can tell in the photos, their models are teeny-tiny, I look like a linebacker next to them!) so I would size up unless you too are a teeny human. And don’t forget, you can always save 25% on your order with code LWW25.

A note on the fascinators, if you love these – head to Britni’s shop and drop her a note asking for a custom order. She can whip one of these up for you in whatever color combination you like. She can also take things you like on one piece and combine it with something else. Or you can just let her dream something up for you. I do this every year and always love what she comes up with.

I hope you know that you look gorgeous and that it’s okay not to be teeny-tiny! (Also fine to be teeny-tiny if that’s your shape.) 🙂

Thank you so much Tara – It means a lot! Agreed, happy no matter what shape you are but sometimes in pictures I Look like the big kid in school! haha! xx

Love that look on you! Any chance those Dress and Dwell gals are going to do a pop-up on the Louisville side this year?

    • Danielle says:

THank you Laura! Unfortunately, I don’t think they are going to. They may do something small but not like last year’s set up. Such a bummer.

This dress is absolutely stunning on you!
