The Little Black Dress – Topped Off and Made New

Jul 31, 2018

Since cleaning out my closet and seriously paring down my wardrobe, I’ve been depending more on simple staples instead of trendier pieces. That’s not to say I don’t love a trend (this dress for example), but closet workhorses, like this little black dress, have become my go-to. This one, that I bought a couple years ago at the Tibi Outlet in Sea Island (a must visit if you’re ever there), is one of those things I still turn to time and time again.

Rather than always share new things, I want to do a better job of sharing how certain items can be re-worn and re-mixed. Like so many people, I’m working on focusing on quality over quantity and longevity over trendiness. This bag and these sandals have both been on here before and I’m thinking of doing a weekly series sharing multiple ways I’ve worn the same item. So be on the lookout for that.

I also want to show how something simple in your closet can be mixed up and given a whole new look with some accessories. Cue this hat.

A couple weeks ago I found this beauty on my doorstep as a gift from Jill Courtemanche. I worked with Jill on a bunch of Derby posts and she so graciously sent me this as a thank you. Best thank you gift ever. It is really stunning and makes even the simplest outfit, like this LBD, instantly chic.

It basically gave new life to these old closet staples. That and these sunglasses. It’s fun to see how something as simple as a couple accessories can totally transform a look. I felt infinitely cooler than I actually am in this outfit which may be why it’s one of my favorite looks I’ve ever posted over here. I’ll go back to looking totally awkward and basic in no time though. Until then, I’m basking in the coolness this hat provides.

A little black dress is a closet necessity. When you find a good one, you can wear it so many ways. With block heels for work, paired with booties in fall for drinks out, sandals for a summer night on the town, strappy heels for a cocktail party or sneakers for runnings errands. I’ve worn this one in just about every way possible. Here’s a few more that fit the bill.

Jill Courtemanche makes the most beautiful pieces and this fedora is no exception. It comes in a couple colors and fits really well ie. – doesn’t sit too high or too low on your forehead. Can we all collectively unite to make wearing hats like this a regular occurrence again?
